Shaken Up After an Accident?

Aug Blog Image SmallIf you’ve been in a major or even minor collision, chances are your car wasn’t the only thing shaken up! Working in the collision repair industry we often speak with customers immediately following a car accident. It doesn’t matter if someone damaged a side mirror or they are requesting a tow truck to our auto body facility.

Concerns such as: collision damage repair, injuries, and insurance claims all come to mind. But what about your emotions and stress level?

About a year ago, our customer service representative was in a minor fender bender during her lunch hour. Luckily, she was ok, but her car definitely needed collision repair. Even though she knows the drill, involving estimates, insurance claims, and the auto body repair process, she was not herself and definitely stressed!

Common Emotions to Expect Following an Accident

Shock and Disbelief: You may experience feelings of shock and disbelief for days after a collision. Some people are afraid to get back in the car or find themselves tense while driving.

Anger and Irritability:  Customers sometimes tell us they are upset with themselves, the person that damaged their vehicle or the insurance company. It is easy to lose your temper during this time, but most people understand and will try to help you through the process. Maybe it’s your friend, family member or it could even be the nice lady at our front desk that had a similar experience.

Guilt and Self Blame: Some may feel responsible for the accident, or think they could have avoided the collision. Experts suggest to remind yourself that these expectations are not reasonable.

Anxiety, Worry, and Fear: Are you experiencing a difficult time sleeping or relaxing? Remember alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes will make this worse. Do something good for your body and mind; take a walk, eat a balanced meal, get plenty of sleep and be patient with yourself.

Where Do You Go From Here?

  • Try to return to your normal routine.
  • Talk with your family, friends or a professional if needed.
  • If others were in the car with you try not to argue about who was to blame for the collision.
  • If a child or teenager was involved in the car accident, inform their teachers and the principal. It is likely they will cut them some slack.
